Ukraine arms fund: EU agrees €6.6bn release

European Union countries have agreed to release 6.6 billion euros, or $7.5 billion, from a fund linked to arms supplied to Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Friday.

The money comes from the European Peace Facility, which reimburses member states for military support. Payments had been blocked for years by Hungary, which opposed military aid to Ukraine.

Kallas said 4.7 billion euros would reimburse member states. Some countries have said they will use their shares to help Ukraine fight Russia.

She said 900 million euros would fund the EU-led training mission for Ukrainian forces, while one billion euros would support new joint procurement of equipment.

Hungary changed its position after Peter Magyar replaced Viktor Orban as prime minister in April, and EU capitals had since been discussing how to use the money.
