Ukraine amputee soldiers model at Kyiv Fashion Week

Ukrainian soldiers who lost limbs in the war took to the runway at Kyiv Fashion Week in clothes designed for people with prosthetic limbs.

Veteran Yaroslav Sharkiy, a former combat medic who lost a leg at the front, modelled pieces by Ukrainian designer Igor Sidletskiy. Sharkiy said ordinary trousers can be difficult to adjust around his prosthetic leg in public, while Sidletskiy's looser designs were comfortable and stylish.

Mykola Kovalyov, a 22-year-old former soldier who lost both legs in fighting in the northeastern Sumy region, also joined the show. He said presenting inclusive fashion offered a chance to create after the destruction of war.

Olga Dolga, the only civilian model in the show, said she lost her leg when Russia bombed a shop in her hometown of Dobropillya. She said Ukraine needed to highlight inclusivity because many people had lost limbs.

Non-governmental organisations estimate that between 50,000 and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost a limb while fighting since Russia's invasion.
