UK flights: 425 cancelled after air traffic glitch

More than 400 flights to and from UK airports were cancelled on Tuesday after Britain's air traffic control service NATS reported a technical issue in its flight system.

Aircraft tracking site FlightRadar24 said 425 flights to and from British airports had been cancelled by 5:00 pm (1600 GMT). NATS said it had implemented a fix and that the system was starting to recover while it worked with airlines and airports.

Heathrow, Gatwick, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh airports were affected. Dublin Airport in Ireland said it had cancelled dozens of flights.

British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said technicians had identified the issue and were fixing it, and advised passengers to check with their airlines.
