Typhoon Saudel shuts schools and ferries in Fujian

Authorities in eastern China's Fujian province closed schools and suspended ferry routes on Thursday after forecasters warned of heavy rain from Typhoon Saudel. Local authorities said Saudel made its third landfall in China on Fujian's coast on Thursday morning, after earlier hitting neighbouring Zhejiang province twice. State broadcaster CCTV reported that 24 passenger ferry routes along Fujian's coast were suspended. Fujian's emergency management authority warned of rainstorms and secondary disasters including flash floods and landslides, saying the province was experiencing persistent heavy rainfall. The storm follows months of extreme weather in parts of China, where several typhoons have brought torrential rain and forced large evacuations.
