Turkey school shooting wounds 11, three in intensive care

A teenager opened fire outside a high school in Turgutlu in western Turkey on Tuesday, wounding 11 pupils, officials said.

Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said 10 minors were still being treated, including three in intensive care. One victim had been discharged.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the suspect, also a minor, was detained after the attack. He said the suspect's parents and grandfather were detained for questioning.

Ciftci said the gun used in the shooting was registered in the name of the suspect's grandmother and had been kept at the grandparents' home. Gurlek said investigators were examining how the weapon reached the minor, how it was kept and supervised, and allegations of bullying before the attack.

The education ministry suspended lessons for the day at the school. Turkish media broadcast CCTV footage of an alleged attacker holding what appeared to be a long-barrelled gun, and NTV reported that the weapon was a shotgun.

Ciftci said security measures introduced after earlier school shootings in April were in place at the time of Tuesday's attack. He said the school had been classified as first-degree risk, a category based on the number and type of crimes in the area.

The shooting came after two attacks by teenagers on consecutive days in April raised concern about school security in Turkey. After those attacks, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged tighter gun controls and said school safety would be a priority.
