Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong ex-leader, dies at 89
Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong's first post-colonial leader, has died aged 89, his office said.
Tung “passed away peacefully in the presence of his beloved family members” on Tuesday, his office said in a statement issued Wednesday.
The Shanghai-born former shipping tycoon was chosen by Beijing to lead Hong Kong after the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997. He served as chief executive until 2005.
Tung left office with two years remaining in his second term, citing poor health, and was replaced by Donald Tsang.
His tenure coincided with the Asian financial crisis, record unemployment and unease over Chinese influence in Hong Kong's affairs. In July 2003, about 500,000 people protested against restrictive anti-subversion laws proposed by China, and a similar number rallied for democracy a year later.
In December 2004, Tung and his cabinet were publicly criticised by China's then-president Hu Jintao for poor performance. Tung stepped down shortly afterwards.
