EU calls possible US diesel export ban a 'bad idea'
The European Union said Thursday that a possible US diesel export ban was a "bad idea", after US President Donald Trump expressed support for restricting diesel exports as fuel prices rose.
Trump said Tuesday that he backed the idea when asked about it during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York. "I've called for that too. I've said let's not send out the diesel," Trump told reporters.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was also at the talks, said Washington was examining whether a full or partial ban would work, including in terms of overall refining capacity.
Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters last week that he was open to a diesel export ban if it would take pressure off prices.
Fuel prices have risen since the start of the US-Iran war in late February, with congressional midterm elections due in November.
