Trump $1 coins enter circulation, US Mint says

The US Treasury issued $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump's face on Wednesday, and the US Mint said the coins were "also in circulation".

The coins were minted to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. A roll of 25 $1 coins was available for $61, while a 100-coin bag was available for $154.50.

The coin has Trump's face on one side, along with the words "Liberty" and "In God We Trust" and the dates 1776-2026. The other side has a version of the US presidential seal, with an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch and a shield marked "250".

Federal law says no living president may appear on US currency. The Treasury did not immediately comment on whether the new $1 coin violates that law.

In May, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said his department was pursuing a plan to issue a new $250 bill with Trump's face on it, and acknowledged that Congress would have to change the law barring living people from appearing on currency.

The Treasury also announced in March that US paper money would soon carry Trump's signature, described as a first for a sitting US president.
