Syria says munitions vehicle blast kills at least five

Syrian authorities said at least five people were killed Tuesday when a vehicle carrying munitions exploded in Binnish, in northwest Idlib province.

A security source told state news agency SANA that the vehicle exploded in the city of Binnish, but did not say what caused the blast. Local health authorities said at least five people were killed.

A Syrian government source, speaking anonymously to AFP, said the vehicle belonged to a local arms dealer and gave no further details. SANA published images showing charred cars as firefighters doused one smoking vehicle, with debris scattered across the area.

Idlib was previously a stronghold of rebel and jihadist groups before Islamist-led forces overthrew longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The region has seen occasional explosions at military sites and arms depots, with authorities not announcing their causes.
