Sweden climate lawsuit trial expected in 2027

A Swedish activist group suing the state over alleged climate inaction expects the case to go to trial in the second half of 2027.

Lawyers for the Swedish state and the Aurora association, which includes climate activist Greta Thunberg, met on Monday for a pre-trial hearing at Stockholm District Court.

Aurora legal coordinator Ida Edling said the hearing was the first time Sweden's climate duties had been discussed in a Swedish district court. She said the parties aimed to clarify what they agreed and disagreed on as the case moves forward.

Aurora filed the suit in February after earlier attempts ran into legal obstacles. Sweden denies the group's accusation that it is failing to do enough to curb climate change. Martin Mork, a lawyer representing the state, said Sweden had fulfilled its obligations under European law.

The state also asked the court to consider whether it should seek a preliminary ruling from the EU's Court of Justice.

Uncertainty notes

The trial timing is Aurora's expectation and has not been stated as a confirmed court date.
The court has not yet been reported as deciding whether to seek a preliminary ruling from the EU's Court of Justice.
