Spain equals September heat record at 45.7C
Spain equalled its September heat record on Thursday when weather agency AEMET measured 45.7C in El Granado, a municipality in Andalusia, the agency said Friday.
AEMET said the reading matched the 45.7C recorded in Montoro in 2016, also in Andalusia. It was the highest temperature registered in Spain this year, during a week of summer-like heat above 40C in parts of the south and west.
AEMET briefly issued its highest red alert for heat in small areas of Andalusia on Thursday, the first such September warning since the alert system began in 2007.
The agency also said mainland Spain had its hottest January-August period on record and described the trend as a sign that warming in Spain is accelerating. Scientists say human-driven climate change has intensified and lengthened Europe's summer heatwaves.

AEMET said the 45.7C reading was Spain's highest temperature registered this year.
