South Korea weighs Hormuz deployment before US talks

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is due to travel to Washington from Thursday to Saturday for talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with investment negotiations and a possible deployment to the Strait of Hormuz on the agenda, Seoul's foreign ministry said Wednesday.

South Korea agreed last year to $350 billion in US investments under a deal to avoid the worst of President Donald Trump's tariffs, but specific projects and final terms are still being negotiated.

Seoul is also considering whether to send forces to the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has pressed South Korea to help, while Iran has warned Seoul to stay out of the waterway.

The ministry said the talks would cover South Korea-US relations, the Korean Peninsula and regional and global issues.
