Slovakia school attack kills one, wounds two

One woman was killed and another woman and a child were wounded in an attack at a school in Staskov, northwestern Slovakia, emergency workers said Tuesday.

Emergency Medical Services Operations Centre spokeswoman Petra Klimesova said the two injured people were taken to hospital. She said one of them, a 44-year-old woman, had a stab wound to the chest.

Slovak media reported that the woman who died was a teacher, the injured people were another teacher and a pupil, and the attacker was an eighth-grade teenage pupil.

Police said they were investigating “a violent crime” and that the situation was under control.

Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed condolences, and President Peter Pelligrini said he was shocked by what he described as another case of a student attacking teachers and a classmate.

The attack follows previous deadly school attacks in Slovakia, including a knife attack in Spisska Stara Ves in January last year and a 2020 stabbing at an elementary school in central Slovakia.
