Russian and Ukrainian strikes kill at least 16

Russian and Ukrainian strikes killed at least 16 people over the previous 24 hours, officials on both sides said Saturday, as the war continued in its fifth year.

Ukrainian authorities said Russian strikes killed at least six people in northeastern Sumy, in Zaporizhzhia and in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a 17-year-old girl was among the victims. In Kyiv, several people were wounded a day after a daytime Russian attack killed seven people.

Russian authorities said Ukrainian strikes killed four people in the Krasnodar and Belgorod regions. Vladimir Saldo, appointed by Moscow to lead occupation authorities in the Kherson region, said a Ukrainian drone hit a cafe in Askaniya-Nova, near Crimea, on Friday evening, killing two young women and a man.

Moscow-appointed official Yevgeny Balitsky said overnight Ukrainian strikes killed three more people in the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday that Russia was “escalating every single day”. He said Ukraine hit an oil refinery in Russia's southern Krasnodar region and a plant in neighbouring Rostov region that he said was supplying Russian forces.

Zelensky called for more sanctions on Moscow. US President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly this week that a deal to end the war was “going to happen”, but no breakthrough has been reported in US-led talks.
