North Korea hails Russia bridge as China span nears
North Korea has described the first road bridge across its narrow border with Russia as a sign of closer ties, after a Monday ceremony opened the route over the Tumen River.
North Korean official Pak Thae Song said the bridge's completion added new momentum to bilateral cooperation, according to the official KCNA news agency. Russia has said the bridge is designed for growth in freight and could handle up to 300 vehicles a day, adding a vehicle crossing to existing rail and air links between the neighbours.
The opening comes as Pyongyang also works toward another road link with China. North Korea and China are already connected by the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, but its capacity is limited. The New Yalu River Bridge, intended as an alternative and eventual replacement, is expected by experts to be completed this year.
Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University, said the Russia and China routes could give North Korea more economic and strategic options and help it maximise gains between Moscow and Beijing. He said their completion would also send a political and geopolitical message showing a "North Korea-China-Russia continental triangular bloc".
Russia and North Korea have expanded military and economic ties since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive in 2022. North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia in 2024 to help repel a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region, while Kyiv has accused Moscow of using North Korean missiles in regular barrages.
Ukrainian rights group Truth Hounds has warned that the new bridge could become a route for moving North Korean troops, construction brigades and military officials into Russia, with Russian technology and resources moving the other way.
South Korea's central bank estimated in July that North Korea's economy grew more than 3% for a third straight year in 2025, citing expanded economic cooperation with Russia as a major driver. An official at the bank also linked higher foreign currency earnings to North Korea's troop deployment to Russia.

North Korea also has an under-construction span to China as part of a broader shift in overland links.
Lim Eul-chul said the Russia and China routes could let North Korea encourage competition between Moscow and Beijing and maximise its gains.
Lim said the bridge could send a message to the United States that North Korea has alternatives to seeking sanctions relief through talks.
The New Yalu River Bridge is expected by experts to be completed this year.
Lim described the development as showing a North Korea-China-Russia continental triangular bloc.
