Russia-North Korea first road bridge opens

Russia and North Korea held a ceremony on Monday, September 7, to open the first road bridge across their narrow shared border, adding a new vehicle route over the Tumen River as the two countries deepen ties.

The Russian government said the bridge is intended to handle projected growth in freight and passenger traffic and could allow up to 300 vehicles a day.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin told the ceremony by video link that the first automobile route would strengthen connections between the two countries. Russian government video showed trucks from both sides crossing the bridge as crowds applauded.

Russia and North Korea already had rail and air links. They have expanded military and economic ties since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive. North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia in 2024 to help repel a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region, while Kyiv has accused Moscow of using North Korean missiles.

The two countries signed a defence treaty in 2024 that provides for mutual support if either country is attacked.

North Korea bars most citizens from leaving and closely monitors incoming travellers. Russian tourism to North Korea has increased in recent years, although Pyongyang sometimes closes its border at short notice.
