Resident Evil film leans into game's horror roots

Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil film aims to capture the horror and gameplay feel of the video game series when it opens in US theaters on Sept. 18, 2026.

Cregger, who directed Weapons and Barbarian, told AFP that his goal was to be "authentic to the spirit of the games" rather than rely on existing characters or plots from the franchise.

The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a courier who accepts a late-night delivery job from a hospital before events turn into a nightmare. Cregger said he used camera work from behind the protagonist to make the film feel closer to a game perspective.

He also said the film follows a game-like progression in the weapons available to the hero, starting with a pistol before moving to stronger weapons.

Cregger said he wanted to focus on horror and a slow sense of dread. He acknowledged that some Resident Evil fans may want more direct use of game characters or details, but said he chose an original story that celebrates what he likes about the games.

Abrams told AFP he had not played Resident Evil before taking the role, but became familiar with the games while preparing for the film.
