Princess Diana 'revenge dress' heads to New York auction
Princess Diana's famous “revenge dress” is to be auctioned in New York in December, Sotheby's announced Thursday.
The off-the-shoulder gown, designed by Christina Stambolian, is estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000, with some proceeds going to charity.
Diana wore the dress to a gala dinner in London in 1994 on the day her husband, then-Prince Charles, admitted in a television interview to being unfaithful. Charles is now king.
Morgane Halimi of Sotheby's said Diana turned the dress into “one of the most powerful messages she ever made” during a highly scrutinised period of her life.
The dress was previously auctioned for cancer and AIDS charities in 1997, shortly before Diana died in a car accident in Paris at the age of 36.
Uncertainty notes
The final auction price is not known.
