Peru cuts Iran ties over Middle East war
Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, with its Foreign Ministry accusing Tehran of escalating conflict in the Middle East and disrupting maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ministry said Tuesday that Peru, citing what it called its historic pacifist stance, had decided to cut ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Peru said it viewed with “deep concern” what it described as severe restrictions imposed by Iran and disruption of international trade through Hormuz.
The decision comes after the Middle East war restarted in recent days, with new US attacks on Iran on Sunday and retaliatory strikes since then.
Peru's conservative President Keiko Fujimori, who took office on July 28, has signalled a willingness to work with Washington and moved to join US President Donald Trump's Shield of Americas initiative days after taking office.
Chile, Peru's neighbour, recently announced the closure of its embassy in Tehran but did not sever relations, citing economic and security reasons.
