Palestinian killed by Israeli police in Jerusalem
Israeli police said Friday they killed a Palestinian man in central Jerusalem after he attempted to attack officers with a knife.
Police said security forces killed the man overnight near Damascus Gate, an entrance to Jerusalem's Old City, and that his death was pronounced at the scene. They said he was a 33-year-old from Jerusalem.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa also reported the death and said police set up a military cordon around Damascus Gate and the Old City.
The incident came ahead of the Jewish New Year on September 11, with prayers being held every night at the Western Wall. The holiday period lasts three weeks and has seen violent incidents in the past.
Uncertainty notes
