OpenAI launches cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol after scrapping upgrade

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol on Tuesday, a new mid-range artificial intelligence model that costs five times less than its flagship GPT-6 Astra.

The launch came one day after OpenAI said it had abandoned plans for GPT-6.1 Astra because the model frequently ignored instructions.

GPT-6.1 Sol ranks below GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI released in early September. The announcement was made at the company's annual developer conference.

The move comes as OpenAI and Anthropic compete on AI model pricing and prepare for initial public offerings.
