Oman navy rescues 16 from Saudi tanker hit by Iran

Oman's navy said on September 7 that it rescued 16 crew members from the Saudi-flagged oil tanker SIDR, which Iran attacked a week earlier in the Strait of Hormuz.

Oman's Maritime Security Centre said a Royal Navy of Oman vessel provided logistical support to the tanker's 25-member crew, evacuated 16 crew members and ensured medical care was provided.

The statement did not say what happened to all crew members, but it confirmed that two seamen on the vessel had been killed.

Saudi Arabia's national shipping firm said on September 2 that two Filipino sailors were killed when the tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident came as violence flared between the United States and Iran. After six months of war, the two sides remain at an impasse, with Iran disrupting traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and the United States continuing a counter-blockade of Iranian ports.
