Nepal flood: woman rescued after 10 days

Rescuers pulled 64-year-old Chandrika Shrestha alive from her mud-buried home in Nepal's Nuwakot district on Saturday, 10 days after flooding struck the China-Nepal border region.

Members of Nepal's Armed Police Force cheered as Shrestha, covered in mud, was pulled from the house. Police deputy superintendent Iqbal Hawari told AFP that a police team found her while clearing the area and that she had been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.

A video released by Nepal's Armed Police Force showed only part of her house visible, with lower floors submerged by thick sludge.

Emergency personnel said earlier that rescuers had found a Chinese man alive inside a tunnel of the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal's Rasuwa district.

Search teams have been looking for survivors since a wall of water and mud swept through the border area after a glacial and rock collapse on August 26.

Nepal's national disaster agency said 1,344 bodies had been recovered in Nepal and about 5,000 people were missing. Chinese state media said 31 people had been killed and 531 were missing in China. Those figures bring the overall stated toll to 1,375 dead and more than 5,500 missing.
