Mostafa Tajzadeh granted temporary prison leave

Jailed Iranian reform activist Mostafa Tajzadeh has been granted temporary leave from prison after more than four years in detention, his wife told the ISNA news agency on Sunday.

Fakhrossadat Mohtashamipour said Tajzadeh “has been granted a few days' leave from today,” without specifying the duration.

Tajzadeh, 69, is a prominent figure in Iran's reformist camp and served as a deputy interior minister under former president Mohammad Khatami. He has been serving a five-year sentence at Tehran's Evin prison for undermining state security since July 2022.

He was also charged with “propaganda” against the state in 2024 in a new case. He had previously spent seven years in prison after being arrested in 2009 alongside other reformist leaders following Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's contested re-election.

While imprisoned at Evin, Tajzadeh regularly published open letters criticising government policies and has called for democracy and “structural changes” in Iran's political system.
