Microsoft AI code stresses human control

Microsoft's AI division published a code of conduct on Monday for how its artificial intelligence models should behave, saying its systems should remain under human control.

The company said the document is built around what it calls “Humanist AI,” with the guiding idea that “people matter more than AI.”

Microsoft said the timing was partly linked to security concerns. It cited recent large-scale, coordinated hacking campaigns carried out with the help of AI agents as a sign that the industry should not delay.

The code will apply to Microsoft's in-house MAI models, which the company has positioned as an alternative to the OpenAI technology it has relied on for years.

The move came days after Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published an essay calling for AI companies to deliberately slow the pace at which they improve model capabilities. OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Elon Musk quickly backed that appeal on social media.
