Mexico says 8 rescued from cartel clinic

Mexican authorities said Thursday they rescued eight people who had been forced to work for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel from a clandestine clinic in Jalisco state.

Jalisco prosecutor Salvador Gonzalez said the farm holding the clinic was a CJNG stronghold and was used to shelter recruits injured during activities they were made to carry out. He said the people found there had been deprived of their freedom. Two of the rescued people were on crutches.

State prosecutors said six people guarding the clinic were arrested. Images released by prosecutors showed dark rooms with mattresses on the floor and stained walls.

Authorities found the site while investigating the disappearance of a 20-year-old man last seen in late July after leaving home in a taxi to answer a supposed farm job offer.

Jalisco has one of Mexico's highest missing-person rates, and cartels have lured victims with fake job offers. The Mexican government said last week it had disabled more than 1,700 social media profiles spreading fake job offers and trying to lure young people into crime. About 134,000 people are missing in Mexico.

Uncertainty notes

It is not stated whether the 20-year-old man whose disappearance led authorities to the site was among the people rescued.
The identities and current medical conditions of the rescued people were not given.
