Macron urges open-source AI beyond US and China

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Tuesday for countries to work together on an open-source artificial intelligence model that would not depend on the United States or China.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly, Macron said countries should build a frontier AI model independent of the “great powers”.

“I don't want anyone to become the vassal of one of the great powers. Rather, we must come together to build an open-source frontier model, a cutting-edge model,” he said.

Macron said investment capabilities should be pooled to build and share the model. “We should not depend on somebody else,” he added.
