UK summons Russian diplomat over Leipzig drone
The UK summoned Russia's charge d'affaires on Thursday over an explosive-laden drone incident at Leipzig airport in Germany last month, condemning what it called an “egregious and reckless” attack.
A British foreign ministry spokesperson said the summons involved Russia's most senior diplomat in the UK and described the incident as “the latest in a clear pattern of attempts by the Russian state to undermine our collective security”. The spokesperson said Britain told Moscow it would “continue to expose Russian hostile activity at every level”.
Russia's Embassy said on Telegram that Charge D'Affaires Vasily Tsyganov received the official protest at the Foreign Office and that the “baseless and absurd accusations” were categorically rejected. The embassy accused Kyiv's allies of “coordinated provocation” and warned that any escalation would receive an “appropriate and carefully calibrated response”.
Germany has blamed Russia for the Leipzig airport incident. German officials have said the drone was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane at the airport on August 4. Berlin announced measures including shutting a Russian consulate and ending the contract for a Russian cultural centre in Berlin.
EU countries summoned Russian envoys on Wednesday and discussed new sanctions over the incident. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said foreign ministers agreed to keep working on a sanctions proposal linked to Russia's military industry.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called Germany's retaliatory actions “a mistake, a serious one”.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said ministers agreed to keep working on sanctions against 1,600 people and entities linked to Russia's military industry, hoping to adopt them next month.
Kallas said there was broad consensus to continue work on banning visas for Russians who fought in Ukraine and increasing restrictions for Russian tourists.
