Keir Starmer to quit UK parliament

Former British prime minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday that he will quit the UK parliament to focus on international affairs.

Starmer said on social media that it was the “right time” to resign as MP for Holborn and St Pancras in London after 11 years, a move that will trigger a by-election.

“It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Starmer said.

The Camden New Journal reported that Starmer had informed the Labour party of his decision to leave parliament after 11 years as an MP, including six years as Labour leader.

Andy Burnham became prime minister in July after Starmer announced his resignation amid pressure from Labour MPs. Starmer, a former human rights lawyer, helped Labour win a landslide victory in the 2024 general election but was unpopular during his two years in power.
