Kandahar airstrike hits city, resident says

A resident said an airstrike hit Kandahar in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, reporting the sound of a jet, a large explosion and a fire in the centre of the city.

Afghan military and government officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No casualties or damage figures were reported.

The reported strike came days after bombardment in eastern Afghanistan. The United Nations said at least three civilians were killed in those strikes, while Pakistan said they killed 28 militants.

Strikes have occurred several times in Afghan border areas, but attacks on Afghan cities are rare. Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire in March after fighting earlier in the year, but mediation has not produced a lasting settlement.
