Israeli strike kills one in south Lebanon, state media says

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said an Israeli drone strike killed one person and wounded another in the southern city of Nabatieh on Wednesday, while Israel said it hit Hezbollah infrastructure after an attack targeting its soldiers.

The agency said the strike was launched by an enemy drone and also reported other Israeli strikes in the area.

Israel's military said Hezbollah had launched two explosive drones overnight toward Israeli soldiers in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area. It said no Israeli troops were hurt. The military said it responded by striking Hezbollah infrastructure in the Nabatieh area.

Hezbollah has not claimed any attacks on Israeli targets for weeks.

Israel has recently increased attacks on south Lebanon, particularly around Nabatieh, where the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge is located. Israel has previously said Hezbollah fighters are in underground infrastructure there.

Last week, Israeli airstrikes killed a woman, while Israel's military said it had struck Hezbollah targets. On Aug. 15, Israeli strikes killed 11 people, including several children, and Israel's military said it killed two Hezbollah commanders in raids launched in retaliation for an attack by the group.

Lebanese authorities say Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the Middle East war in March by attacking Israel in support of Iran, triggering Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion that they say have killed more than 4,300 people. Lebanon's health ministry says Israeli attacks have killed at least 8,920 people since hostilities initially erupted in October 2023, after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in support of Hamas over the Gaza conflict.

Violence has dropped since a US-Iran memorandum of understanding on the broader conflict in June and a later Israel-Lebanon framework agreement, but Lebanon continues to report Israeli strikes, artillery shelling and demolitions in southern villages and towns.
