Kuwait calls Iran strikes direct threat to security
Kuwait's foreign ministry called overnight strikes by Iran a “direct threat” to the Gulf state's security and stability Thursday, after Kuwait's army said its air defences were intercepting missile and drone attacks.
The ministry said the strikes threatened “the safety of its citizens and residents” and were “a grave breach of the rules of international law”.
Kuwait's army had earlier said its air defences were engaging missile and drone attacks from Iran. Iranian state TV said Tehran was targeting US bases in Kuwait “in response to America's crimes against the Iranian people.”
Iran has also targeted US bases in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region after extensive US bombardment of sites across Iran.
The latest round of fighting began when Washington hit Iranian targets on Sunday, the first known US strikes in several weeks. Iran reacted with anger after the Iranian Red Crescent said a US attack killed four people, including a child, at a wedding in southern Iran on Tuesday and wounded more than 50 people.
Washington did not address that incident directly. US Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins said “the US military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC,” referring to Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
