Iran foreign minister to visit Qatar before UN, IRNA says

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Tehran on Sunday evening for New York and planned a brief stop in Doha for regional consultations, state news agency IRNA reported.

IRNA said the stop in Qatar would come before Araghchi attends the United Nations General Assembly.

The visit comes as Iranian officials say they have again set out through mediators Tehran's conditions for ending its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz has been central to the Middle East war that began in late February. Tehran blockaded the waterway in response to US-Israeli attacks and now requires vessels to obtain Iranian authorisation to pass, citing security and sovereignty concerns.

Iran is also considering a mechanism to impose service fees. The United States has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports while the conflict remains deadlocked.
