India has hottest August since 1901, bureau says
India had its hottest August since records began in 1901, with a mean temperature of 28.01C, the India Meteorological Department said.
The department said the mean temperature was 0.67C above the long-term average for August. It said the figure broke the previous August record of 28.0C, set in 2023.
India's monsoon rainfall was 16 percent below normal in August, the department said. It said the shortfall increased heat, partly because of El Nino conditions.
El Nino is a naturally occurring climate pattern that changes winds, air pressure and rainfall around the world. In India and Southeast Asia, it typically brings drier conditions.
India is particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, with dangerous temperatures reported in parts of the country in recent years.
