Ig Nobel physics prize goes to urinal splashback study

A study on splashback from men's urinals won the Ig Nobel physics prize in Zurich, one of the annual alternative awards for unusual scientific work.

The prize-winning team included researchers from the United States, Canada, China and Saudi Arabia. The researchers said one million litres of urine a day have to be cleaned from the floors of men's toilets in the United States alone.

The Ig Nobel economics prize went to a study that found rich people are more likely than others to steal children's sweets. Psychologists Justin Kruger and David Dunning were also honoured for their work on the Dunning-Kruger effect, which describes how people with limited knowledge or ability can overestimate themselves.
