Yemen war: Houthis say Saudi Arabia launched 28 strikes

Yemen's Houthis said Sunday that Saudi Arabia launched 28 strikes over the previous 24 hours on Taiz, Al-Jawf and Marib governorates, as fighting with Yemen's Riyadh-backed government continued.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the Saudi air force used F-15 and Typhoon aircraft that took off from the Khamis Mushait and Taif airbases.

The claim came during a renewed phase of Yemen's civil war. This month, the Houthis, who already held most of Yemen's populated areas, launched an offensive to take the country's Red Sea coast, giving them control of the Bab al-Mandab strait. The group says navigation through the strait is open except for Saudi vessels.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said Saturday that the group fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh at dawn, after a fire broke out near the Saudi capital's international airport.

Yemen's war began in 2014 when the Houthis captured Sanaa. Saudi Arabia has led a coalition backing the internationally recognised government since 2015. The war had been largely frozen since 2022 but resumed in July.

The conflict has caused a severe humanitarian crisis. In 2025, the United Nations warned that 17 million people in Yemen were struggling to eat and another million faced extreme hunger.
