Guyana agrees to receive some US deportees
Guyana will receive a limited number of migrants deported from the United States under an agreement announced Saturday by President Irfaan Ali's government.
The government said the arrangement applies to deportees who do not have a criminal record. It described the plan as temporary and said it does not amount to permanent resettlement.
Officials said migrants would be relocated to Guyana voluntarily while awaiting the outcome of their immigration status determinations. Depending on the outcome, they would either return to their country of origin or relocate elsewhere by choice, the government said.
The announcement comes as President Donald Trump's administration has pursued deportations to third countries, rather than only to deportees' home countries. Other Central American and Caribbean countries have agreed to cooperate with Washington's deportation campaign, including El Salvador, which received 250 Venezuelans at its CECOT maximum-security prison.
Uncertainty notes
The agreement did not specify the number of deportees Guyana will receive.
The timing of the first relocations was not stated.
