Gunman outside Canada synagogue dies after police shooting

A gunman who was shot by Canadian police after firing at officers outside a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, has died, Ontario's police watchdog said Tuesday.

The 29-year-old man was carrying a shotgun when he approached the Sons of Jacob congregation on Sunday evening as worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur. He shot at police, and officers guarding the synagogue returned fire.

Kristy Dennette, a spokesperson for Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, said the man was hospitalized after the shooting and died on Monday night. She said an injured officer remained in stable condition in hospital.

Police have not confirmed that Belleville's Jewish community was the target. Dennette told reporters that “common sense” would suggest the gunman was trying to attack the synagogue.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the shooting.
