Greenland future is for Greenland and Denmark, EU says
Greenland's future should be decided by Greenland and Denmark and “no one else,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday in Nuuk, while announcing 200 million euros, or $232 million, in new European Union investments for the island.
Von der Leyen spoke after a two-day visit to the capital of the autonomous Danish territory, at a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
“Territorial integrity, sovereignty, the inviolability of borders, these are fundamental principles of international law,” von der Leyen said.
Her comments followed US President Donald Trump's statement earlier this year that Washington needed to control Greenland for national security reasons. Trump ultimately ruled out annexing the island by force.
Von der Leyen also announced an “EU-Greenland Partnership Package” focused on connectivity, clean energy and critical raw materials. She said it meant 200 million euros in new investments for Greenland this year and next.
The package comes on top of the doubling of direct EU aid to Greenland and is meant to support specific projects, including satellite improvements intended to expand internet access in the northern and eastern parts of the island.
