Greenland security deal to be signed at UN Tuesday

Denmark's government said the United States, Denmark and Greenland will sign the security deal on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

The office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Frederiksen, US President Donald Trump and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen would sign the deal at 1430 GMT in the UN building in New York.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham congratulated Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the US-Denmark-Greenland deal.

Burnham said the deal, set to be signed next week, benefited the United States, Greenland and Denmark, according to his office.

Downing Street said Burnham and Frederiksen welcomed Washington's commitment to the region and underlined the strategic importance of the High North for Euro-Atlantic security.

Burnham said he would congratulate US President Donald Trump on the deal when they meet at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the planned agreement a binding deal that would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

Trump said the United States had entered into an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving Washington permanent control over security and other needs in Greenland.

A State Department official said the agreement would prevent China and Russia from having bases or troops in Greenland and would include mechanisms to block sensitive-sector investment.

Denmark and Greenland welcomed the deal, while Denmark said sovereignty and Greenlanders' self-determination were recognised.
