Gaza strikes kill nine, civil defence says
Palestinian officials said Israeli strikes killed nine people in Gaza on Thursday, including a family of four in the northern Gaza Strip and five people in the south.
An official at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said four members of the Ahmad family, including children aged 12 and eight, were killed when an Israeli strike hit a house in the Beit Lahia Project area. The official said the bodies were recovered after the strike.
The Israeli military said it struck a “military structure” from which it said terrorists had previously been identified operating. It said the strike killed Muamen Abd al-Rahman Ahmad, whom it described as a military operative who had taken direct part in combat against Israeli troops in violation of the ceasefire.
A Palestinian security source in Gaza, which is under Hamas authority, said Israeli warplanes struck after midnight in Beit Lahia and separately in the heart of the Jabalia refugee camp. The source also said Israeli forces fired on tents of displaced people and ambulances.
Gaza's civil defence agency said five people were killed in three other Israeli strikes in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, bringing the day's death toll to nine. It said three of them were killed in a drone strike near Khan Yunis.
Israel agreed in October last year to a ceasefire brokered by the United States, but has since advanced further into Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed no let-up in strikes targeting Hamas and no pullout from Gaza until Hamas gives up all of its weapons.
The Gaza health ministry, which operates under Hamas, says Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,300 people since the ceasefire was announced. The Israeli army has identified five deaths in its ranks over the same period, as well as the death of one civilian contractor.
