Delhi building collapse death toll rises to seven
The death toll from a five-storey building collapse in New Delhi has risen to seven, and rescue operations have ended, officials said Monday.
The building crashed down on Sunday in the Satya Niketan area of the Indian capital, which is home to hundreds of university students living in crowded accommodation.
Delhi police said rescue operations had been completed. India's National Disaster Response Force said it pulled 12 people from the site, six of whom were dead. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences said one survivor was later pronounced dead at hospital.
Delhi police said three people were in critical condition.
Disaster agency teams, firefighters and police used heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to search the rubble.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the building's owner had been arrested and several municipal officers suspended. “Anyone found guilty or responsible will not be spared,” she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “distressing”. Building collapses are frequent in India, and illegal structures are common.

The death toll from the New Delhi building collapse has risen to at least six.
AIIMS said its trauma centre received 10 victims: five were brought dead and one critically injured patient later died.
Rescue teams were still searching the rubble on Monday using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs.
