China landslides kill 6, leave 9 missing: state media

Landslides in eastern China have killed six people and left nine others missing, Chinese state media said Tuesday, days after heavy rains brought by Typhoon Saudel.

Xinhua, citing local officials, said a mudslide that hit Mingkeng village in Jiangxi province on Saturday left five people dead and seven missing. Another person was found dead and two others were still missing after landslides hit the nearby townships of Zuo'an and Tanghu.

The landslides followed days of torrential rain from Saudel, which first made landfall on China's eastern coast at the end of last month. Several cities suspended work, schools and transport services during the heavy rains.

Xinhua said the Mingkeng landslide damaged homes and destabilised roads. More than 170 rescuers were deployed to search for missing people.
