China jails former finance regulator for bribery

A Chinese court sentenced former senior finance regulator Wang Jianjun to life in prison on Monday for bribery after finding that he illegally received more than 93.4 million yuan, equivalent to $13.9 million.

Wang, 58, served as vice-chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission from 2021 to 2025. The commission oversees China's financial markets, including stock and bond trading and company listings.

A court in eastern Shandong province said Wang used roles held between 2005 and 2019 to secure benefits for entities or individuals in areas including company listings, corporate financing and contract awards.

The court said Wang received assets and funds directly or through third parties. It said he admitted the facts before the court and expressed remorse.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has maintained an anti-corruption campaign since taking office in late 2012. In recent years, the campaign has widened to include the banking and financial sectors.
