Cape Verde bus crash kills at least 25 on Fogo Island
At least 25 people, mostly children and teenagers, were killed in a bus crash on Cape Verde's Fogo Island, public radio network RCV said on Sunday.
Several others were injured in Saturday's accident, some seriously, Sao Filipe civil protection chief Jose Canuto told reporters.
Canuto and other local authorities said the bus was carrying 32 passengers when it veered off the road and plunged into a deep ravine while returning to Sao Filipe after an excursion to Cha das Caldeiras village inside the Pico do Fogo volcanic crater.
The dead included the bus driver, who organised the yearly excursion as a present for pupils he drove to school during term time.
Emergency workers worked through the night to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage, which stopped in a rocky valley that was hard to reach. RCV said seven victims were buried early Sunday and the rest were expected to be buried later in the day.
Road accidents are rare in Cape Verde, where roads are generally in good condition.
