Bolivia-Paraguay border finalized after 88 years

Bolivia and Paraguay finalized the course of their shared border in La Paz on Wednesday after nearly 88 years of negotiations, Bolivia's foreign ministry said.

The ministry said the two countries had completed the delineation of their entire international boundary, a process carried out by technical commissions from both countries. Their shared border stretches about 755 kilometers.

Delegates from a joint Bolivian-Paraguayan boundary demarcation commission worked in La Paz over the past three days after comparing drone-collected geographic information from the border with desk-based data.

The work ended with agreement on the final outstanding stretch: about 3.5 kilometers along the Rio Negro, which originates in Bolivia.

The negotiations followed the Chaco War, fought between Bolivia and Paraguay from 1932 to 1935 over the Chaco Boreal region. The conflict left between 80,000 and 100,000 people dead, and Bolivia lost an area equivalent to more than half of Paraguay's current territory. The countries signed a peace and boundary treaty in 1938 that began the border demarcation process.
