Bitget says hackers stole $351.6m in crypto
Crypto exchange Bitget said Friday that hackers stole $351.6 million in assets and that it suspected a link to North Korea.
The company said the unauthorised transfers were detected on Thursday evening and that user funds were safe. It said losses from the incident would be covered by its protection fund, which holds more than $464 million.
Chief executive Gracy Chen said on X that Bitget holds more than $1 billion in its own assets. She said the attack was consistent with techniques used by hacker groups linked to North Korea.
Chen said in a statement to AFP that user withdrawals remained temporarily suspended as a precaution, while trading and deposits were operating normally.
Analytics firm TRM Labs said the incident was the largest recorded theft of cryptoassets since the start of the year. In an analysis published on September 8, TRM Labs listed 333 incidents since the start of 2026, with a total of $1.73 billion stolen.
Uncertainty notes
The identity of the hackers has not been independently established in the supplied information.
Bitget did not specify how long withdrawals would remain suspended.
