AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt election, projections show

Germany's far-right AfD won Saxony-Anhalt's regional election on Sunday, according to projections by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, prompting French Europe minister Benjamin Haddad to call the result a “serious moment” for Europe.

The projections gave the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party 44 percent, more than double its previous support and far ahead of about 18 percent for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's centre-right CDU.

Haddad wrote on X that politicians had to listen “with humility” to voters' anger, concerns and fears. He added that “nationalism and xenophobia will never be a solution”.
