12 killed in western Ethiopia violence, MSF says

At least 12 people were killed and dozens were injured in violence in western Ethiopia near the border with South Sudan, Doctors Without Borders said.

The medical charity, also known as MSF, said its teams at Kule health centre in Ethiopia's Gambella region responded to an influx of wounded patients after violence in Itang Special Woreda on September 18.

MSF said it received 88 patients from Friday's violence, including eight people who were already dead and four who died on arrival.

“We call on all those involved to exercise restraint and protect civilians from further violence,” MSF operations manager in Ethiopia Gul Badshah said.

It was not clear who was responsible for the violence.

Intercommunal clashes are frequent in Gambella, a region that is home to more than 400,000 refugees, most of them South Sudanese who fled violence in their country.
