US military plane flies to Moscow, tracking data shows

A US military transport plane flew from Latvia to Moscow's Vnukovo airport early on August 25, according to flight-tracking data from Flightradar24.

The aircraft was a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III used by the United States Air Force. The data indicated that it appeared to have travelled to Latvia from Joint Base Andrews, a US military facility near Washington, DC.

The tracking data did not show who was onboard or why the aircraft travelled to Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment when asked about the flight, saying he did “not have such information”.

The US administration made no public comment on the matter.

Flightradar24 uses a crowd-sourced system of aircraft receivers to map aircraft locations and flight paths. AFP said it was not able to immediately verify the data.
