Kyiv arms depot strike kills 38, Zelensky says
A Russian strike on a Ukrainian military arms depot near Kyiv has killed 38 people, injured 20 and left four missing, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday.
The depot stored ammunition, drones and explosives. The strike triggered a large explosion and fire, with secondary detonations sending flames into the surrounding area.
Zelensky said emergency services in the town of Myla had put out most of the fires and that bomb disposal teams were working to clear the site. He said “the extent of contamination in the area is significant”.
Ukrainian prosecutors have opened an investigation into possible criminal negligence. Officials have voiced anger that arms were being stored close to residential areas after a second strike on a munitions depot near Kyiv in less than two months.
Kyiv region governor Tymur Tkachenko earlier said the dead included the mayor of the nearby town of Dmytrivka. Zelensky has said ammunition should not have been stored near homes or other residential areas and said those responsible must be held accountable.
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched at least two missiles and 267 drones at Ukraine between late Friday and early Saturday.
US-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have been at a standstill for months. Russia has demanded territorial and political concessions from Ukraine, which Kyiv has rejected as tantamount to capitulation.

Ukrainian officials said Ukrainian strikes killed three people in Russia's Belgorod region and caused a fire at a warehouse belonging to Russian retailer Ozon.

Kyiv region governor Tymur Tkachenko said Taras Didych, mayor of Dmytrivska village, was among those killed.
Ukraine's prosecutor general's office said the UAV fell on or struck the enterprise at about 8:10 pm on August 28.
Officials said the facility was still on fire on Saturday.
Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky linked the case to lessons from a previous deadly July attack on a munitions depot in Vyshneve and called for punishment for those responsible.
